Vinix is a bare-metal operating system for amd64 and arm64 written in the V programming language, aiming to be modern, fast, and usable.
Why you might care
Aimed at developers curious about bare-metal OS internals or V's systems capabilities; it targets real hardware, not just emulators, and aims for source-level Linux compatibility (arm64 runs Alpine binaries). It is explicitly pre-alpha and not meant for daily or production use.

# Vinix **Website:** vinix-os.org Vinix is an effort to write a modern, fast, and useful operating system in the V programming language. On arm64 Vinix runs Alpine binaries. - Running on Apple Silicon Macbooks. Only M1 for now. - Exploring V capabilities in bare metal programming and improving the compiler in response to the uncommon needs of bare metal programming. - Having fun. **Note: Vinix is still pre-alpha software not meant for daily or production usage!** ## Download an image The latest release has a bootable desktop image for each architecture: - vinix-amd64.iso: x86-64 PCs and VMs, BIOS or UEFI - vinix-arm64.iso: arm64 VMs, UEFI (QEMU, VirtualBox on Apple Silicon Macs) Older and nightly images are at https://github.com/vlang/vinix/releases. Give the VM at least 4 GiB of memory and an empty disk of 4 GiB or more (16 GiB leaves room for apps). The first boot installs Vinix onto the disk; from then on the machine starts from it and keeps everything, as a QEMU machine started by `scripts/run-desktop-aarch64.sh` does: users, files, installed apps. Keep the ISO attached, since it still boots the machine. Booting a newer ISO with the same disk updates the system and keeps `/root`, where the users' homes are. Vinix only formats a disk that is entirely empty, as a new VM disk is. Without one it runs from memory, and a restart starts from a clean image. Vinix drives IDE and SATA disks on amd64 and VirtIO block devices on arm64. [code] In VirtualBox, create a VM of type *Other/Unknown (64-bit)* or *Other/Unknown (ARM 64-bit)* with 4096 MB of memory, attach the ISO, and set the network adapter type to *Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)*. For amd64, add a new 16 GB hard disk on a SATA controller; Vinix has no driver for the disk controllers VirtualBox gives an arm64 VM, so that one runs from memory. `./scripts/run-iso-virtualbox.sh vinix-amd64.iso` creates such a VM, disk included. VirtualBox only runs guests of its host's architecture. Both images carry the same software: the desktop, GCC, git, curl and `pkg`. Firefox, Chromium and the other larger apps are not on the image; the first launch offers them and `pkg install` downloads them, which is why the commands above give the VM a network card. X11 comes with the first graphical Linux application, and Python with `pkg install python3`. Vinix drives VirtIO and Intel e1000 network cards. ### Virtualization and KVM Vinix can run as a QEMU guest accelerated by KVM on Linux. Vinix also has an expe
