README excerpt
# OPEN TOON An open-source desktop application for 2D drawing and animation, built around direct canvas editing, an integrated timeline and visual motion curves. Project website: opentoon.org ## Get started The current source version is **0.2.0-experimental.71**. Build it using the macOS instructions; it has been compiled and tested locally, but no `.71` binary has been published. The earlier experimental preview packages remain available: - macOS 15+ — Apple Silicon (arm64) ZIP - Linux — x86_64 AppImage These older packages are unsigned experimental previews, not supported 1.0 releases. The macOS build is ad-hoc signed but not notarized; use **Privacy & Security → Open Anyway** if Gatekeeper blocks it. On Linux, make the AppImage executable before opening it. The build instructions cover running from source and the implementation status lists current limitations. The user guide covers drawing, animation and project workflows. The current source build includes an editable Milo rig with connected arms and legs. Developers preparing a macOS package can use the packaging notes. ## Features - Vector drawing and MyPaint raster brushes with mouse and pressure input. - Direct selection, transforms, vector lasso, clipboard, alignment and cleanup. - Layers, exposures, onion skin, playback and integrated Timeline/Xsheet editing. - Visual pose animation, editable motion curves and grouped keyframe operations. - Orthographic output camera with direct framing handles, animated poses and guides. - Local project revisions, recovery snapshots and PNG sequence export. OPEN-TOON is under active development. The implementation status describes supported workflows and current limitations; the roadmap covers planned audio, deformation and expanded rigging/compositing workflows. ## Documentation | Resource | Purpose | |---|---| | User guide | Drawing, animation and editing workflows | | Release notes | Changes and verification by version | | Documentation index | Research, design and engineering references | | Functional catalog | Requirements and acceptance criteria | | Harmony Moment plan | Critical path to a complete character-animation workflow | | Development plan | Full roadmap, dependencies and implementation order | | Architecture | Module boundaries and design decisions | | Dependencies | Open-source components and redistribution records | ## Development C++20 and Qt 6/Qt Quick provide the native application. The document and application modules are independent of Qt; adapters integrate rendering, input, SQLite storage and third-party libraries. Document edits are transactional and undoable. Read CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md before contributing. Canonical JSON catalogs provide stable feature IDs and machine-readable planning context. Validate documentation with `python3 scripts/validate_docs.py`. ## License Original contributions are licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later. Dependencies retain their respective licenses.
