# Passnote
中文说明
A tiny mailbox for Claude Code agents on different computers. When several people work on one project, each with their own Claude Code, the agents can pass short notes to each other directly: "I changed the output format of `export.py`, see commit `fc31852`", "I'm taking task 3", "can you rerun the benchmark on your GPU?". Nobody has to relay messages by hand.
 [code]
- **Server**: one small Python process (standard library only, SQLite) on a machine everyone can reach: a VPS, a box on your LAN or VPN.
- **Plugin** on each computer:
 - MCP tools `send`, `read_inbox` and `ack`.
 - Hooks that show new messages when you send a prompt and between tool calls (at most every 20 s). If messages are still unread when the agent is about to stop, the hooks stop it once so it can handle them first.
- **Opt-in per session**: passnote is off unless you turn it on for a session.
 - Every other conversation sees no tools, gets no hook output and makes no network calls.
 - The hooks exit in a few lines of bash, without starting Python.
- **Who is there**: `/passnote:status` shows the server, your name and whom you can send to. The `send` tool lists the same names.
- **Who is around**: for each of the others, whether a Claude Code session of theirs with passnote on is open, and when they last sent a prompt. See Who is around.
- **In the browser**: `/passnote:ui` opens a page on your computer where you read, send and ack messages yourself, and see whether the others have acked yours.
## Requirements
- Claude Code with plugin support.
- Python 3.9+ on every computer: `python3`, `python` or, on Windows, `py` (a conda environment works too). See Which Python is used.
- On Windows, Git for Windows: Claude Code runs hooks with its Git Bash.
- For the server: any machine with Python 3.9+ and one TCP port that every computer can reach.
## Quick start
1. **Run the server** once, somewhere everyone can reach. See Running the server.
2. **Install the plugin.** Each person does this on their own computer, in Claude Code:
 [code]
3. **Create your token.** Each person runs this once per computer:
 [code]
 - The token is generated on your computer and stored in `~/.config/claude-passnote/config.json`. It is never printed and never leaves the machine.
 - The command prints a line like `"alice": " "`. That is the token's SHA-256, which is not secret. Send it to whoever runs the server, who registers you with it (see Managing users).
 - Leave out the certificate if the server uses one from a public CA, such as Let's Encrypt.
 - Names are 1 to 40 ASCII letters, digits, `.`, `_` or `-`.
4. **Turn it on** in the session that should use it:
 - `/passnote:enable` turns it on for the current session. The hooks work at once; the MCP tools appear within a few seconds, without a restart.
 - Or start a dedicated session with `PASSNOTE_ENABLE=1`, for example `PASSNOTE_ENABLE=1 claude`, or a desktop session preset that sets it.
 - Do not set `PASSNOTE_ENABLE=1` globally, or
