# PawPath — Animal Shelter & Adoption Management
**One record for every animal, from the day it arrives to the day it goes home.**
PawPath is a working prototype of a shelter management system. It connects council officers, shelter staff, veterinarians, adopters and an administrator in a single workflow, and enforces the shelter's business rules at every step, so an animal can't be listed before a vet clears it and an adoption can't be finalised before every check is done.

## The problem
In many community shelters, an animal's story is scattered across council forms, vet notes and adoption spreadsheets. Staff can't see an animal's full history when deciding whether it is ready for rehoming, and adoption decisions are hard to trace afterwards. PawPath puts the whole journey on one record and gives each role exactly the screens it needs.
## Highlights
| | What it does | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| **Role-based access** | Five roles, each with its own menu and home page. Every page and action is re-checked on the server, so typing a URL won't bypass a hidden menu. | Staff, vets and the public only see what they should. |
| **Rule-based listing workflow** | Five listing statuses: *Not Fit → Pre-Listing → Current → Adopted / Removed*. Only a vet can issue medical clearance; only staff can publish. | No animal reaches the public listing without a health check, a suitable behaviour assessment, a photo and a description. |
| **Listing readiness checklist** | Shows every remaining step, grouped by who owns it. | Staff can prepare photos and assessments while the vet does their part. |
| **Applicant comparison** | Ranks every applicant for an animal on one screen by how well their home suits it (children, other pets, time alone, renting without permission…). | Faster, fairer decisions. The ranking guides staff; the three formal checks decide. |
| **End-to-end adoption** | Reference, home and pet-compatibility checks → approval → meet & greet → online agreement → fee → vet pre-release check → finalise. | Finalising automatically closes other applications and books a follow-up call. |
| **Council intake** | Officers submit transfers with supporting documents; staff accept them into a pre-filled registration form. | No re-typing, and the officer can track the outcome. |
| **Audit trail** | Changes to users, roles, listing statuses, medical and behaviour records and applications are logged with who and when. | Accountability for every decision. |
| **Admin controls** | Single-administrator rule with confirmed hand-over; every drop-down list (breeds, temperaments, medications…) is maintainable with soft delete. | Retiring an old medication hides it from new records without rewriting history. |
| **Role-specific dashboards** | Admin sees shelter performance, staff see the animal and adoption pipelines, vets see their health workload. | Each role starts the day with what matters to them. |
## How it works
**Listing status.** Every step names who a
